Groovy Grandmas

It seems like only yesterday that we were Surfie Chicks, Hippies, Rockers and the like.

We were rebelling against both the establishment and our parents. A ‘tranny’ was something we used to listen to our music. We were reading Go-Set magazine, watching Count Down in black and white, wagging school, trying marijuana, and smoking cigarettes because the ads lead us to believe that it made us look cool. We made ourselves sick on exotic alcoholic beverages with names like Blackberry Nip and Porphery Pearl.

We were part of the revolution which liberated women by burning our bras, then ironically imprisoned our feet in uncomfortable if not dangerous platform shoes. We read Cleo and Cosmopolitan and loved the centerfolds. We wore mini skirts and micro minis because we looked great in them and welcomed the wolf whistles, which did wonders for our egos. We were “In” and “Turned On” all at the same time. We were “Fab” and it was a “Gas” to be alive - everything was “Groovy”.

Groovy Grandmas is a unique magazine combining an up to date information and entertainment resource not only exclusively written for the Baby Boomer generation but also written by them.

The brainchild of editor Bryony Preece, who having discovered that she was going to be a grandparent decided to change the public perception of what the term Grandma means. Bryony believes that in this day and age the new breed of grandmas, are not the little old ladies of ages past but rather they are sassy, sexy, smart and savvy women, multitasking grown-up super-mums from the seventies.

The first edition of the online version of Groovy Grandmas went “Live” in October last year the day after the birth of Bryony’s first grandson Xavier. With the help and support of her closest friends, family and freelance Baby Boomer writers from all over the country, plus an impressive line-up of very groovy Baby Boomer guest writers, all considered to be experts in their fields, the online publication has since had over 60,000 individual visitors (600,000 hits) in just twelve months.

Bryony Preece

She married husband Colin when a mere 21 and he was all but 19. The families eventually got over it, three years and three children later. Happily and lovingly married for thirty years in spite of the "it will never last" mantras, until at only fifty Col sadly died after a prolonged illness. The youngest daughter Vanessa and her husband Patch have just made Bryony into a Groovy Grandma God Bless them, and in Bryony's opinion Xavier Colin Culbert is the cutest looking baby that was ever born. (could be the rose coloured glasses).

Bryony wanted to embrace being a Grandma without relinquishing any of her grooviness and so from an almost vain perspective Groovy Grandmas the idea, the brand, the lifestyle, the concept came into being. It would never have been achieved without the help and love from her friends (old and new), her children and their partners, many of whom appear on this page as a testimony to their contributions.

Having emigrated to Australia from Scotland with her husband and 3 daughters over 35 years ago, Jessica now calls Australia her home, and is still in love with her chosen country. Wishes she had been born here!

With hubby in the R.A.A.F. Jessica's first job in Australia was as a barmaid- reason being that there were no babysitting facilities available that long ago, so hubby watched the kids whilst she went out to work at night in the local R.S.L. club.

When the children grew up she changed her night time job for a career in the local newspaper as the Sales Manager in Advertising. She spent 23 happy years in the world of advertising, and has just retired. Now she is busier than ever because there is so much that she wants to do, like learning mosaic. painting, writing for the Groovy Grandmas, gardening. reading, and travelling.

Life - a wonderful journey. Born 1949, I left school at 15, became a hairdresser, married at 19, overseas at 20, and discovered hospitality. Travelled Australia, settling in Coffs Harbour for the birth of our daughter, Kati in "75. Dean, our son arrived "77.

After designing, building & selling multiple homes I became, by choice, a "Single Mum" in 1988. My hairdressing, hospitality & dressmaking skills served "we three" well.

Travel, a huge part of my life was supplemented when Real Estate became my career in1993.

2000 found me in Port Stephens, close to my daughter & extended family. Today family, friends, work, travel & challenges fulfill my needs. "WHAT NEXT I SAY ? "

I am 54 years old and live in beautiful Port Stephens with Peter, my husband of 35 years.

I met my lovely surfer dude when I was 17, we married and had our first child, Jane, just prior to my 19th birthday. Our son, Simon, arrived 3 years later and I thought our family was complete.

Fast forward 35 years, a few ups and downs, and I have become a Groovy Grandma to Pearl 5, Lola 4, Harry 3 and George 18 months.

I have enjoyed all of my life, however the addition of these 4 little people has added icing to the cake.

Now living in Cardiff, Newcastle, but originally from Randwick. Married and moved out west raising 3 children (1 girl, 2 boys) in the Bankstown area. Now a Nana to her daughters 4 children and step Nana to her husbands 4 grandchildren (2nd marriage). Fanatical supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Don't bother visiting her home if you don't like animals. Presently 1 cat & 2 dogs.

Bargain shopper extraordinaire. Rarely pays full price for clothes. Determined to not miss out on anything so fits in trips to the football, gym, movies, theatre, live concerts, cinema, walking the dogs, reading, music, baking cakes & raffles at her local RSL. Obviously housework can suffer. Loves lollies & chocolate and punishes herself by not buying any if she puts on a couple of kilos.

Motto: Love me Love my Cat.

I have been thinking about being "green" and this is the shade I am, I am interested in being self sufficient, I like to try and grow my own vegies, not all of them, but I get great pleasure out of providing what I can for the table.

I work part time so I can see my Grandchildren more often and enjoy the simple things in life. In saying this, I love my coffee machine and use a dishwasher, I like to be in fashion, I exercise regularly and like a good red wine and chocolate. Our holidays are spent touring outback Australia with 4WD and camper trailer, favourite destinations have been the Kimberleys, the Simpson Desert, Cape York and I love Fraser Island.

I have a three legged dog and 2 cats (very ungreen but they have been inherited from my daughter and I do love them). I have 2 sons, they have provided me with the grandchildren and a daughter who is a city chic but starting to display many characteristics of her mother, see she was listening.

I was born in 1952 in Newcastle and am very grateful to still live in this beautiful place. My family is the most important thing in my life and I'm fortunate to have them all living close by. My Mum and Dad need a bit of help these days but I love being with them so it isn't a chore. I'm lucky to have a gorgeous and gentle sister, Jackie, who is just as devoted to Mum and Dad. My two beautiful daughters, Angie (28) and Lauren (26), are my best 'girl friends' and My husband, Mark, is my best 'boy friend' and is my rock and my idol. We do everything together (except I draw the line at soccer) and we even work together at the same desk!

With a loving childhood as my base, I feel I've always had a fortunate life. There have been, and still are, tough times, of course, but I've learnt to focus on the good bits.

I've completed a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), moved to a fantastic old terrace in Hamilton, worked as a councellor at Lifeline, started our own investment property business (Stateland Properties), run personal development workshops, traveled overseas many times and am now doing some writing for Groovy Grandmas.
