Scarf Hat

A scarf hat or hat scarf is the perfect thing to keep your head really warm in the winter months. Because the scarf is attached to the hat, there's no worry that your face or neck are going to get cold.

This somewhat short scarf is long enough to be wrapped around itself and tucked into a coat, or you could make the sides longer to tie and throw over your shoulders if you like.

Materials:

· one hank 8 ply or about 260 yards any light weight 100 percent wool yarn

· one size 7 US circular needle, 16 inch cable

· one set of four size 7 double pointed needles (begin work with circular needle and change to double-points when needed)

· scissors

· yarn needle

Gauge

Twenty stitches and 40 rows per four inches (5 stitches and 10 rows per inch) in stitch knit in the round.

Size

Finished size is 20 inches around, 7.5 inches tall, with scarf pieces 20 inches long. It will fit a small woman unstretched but can easily fit most women's heads when knit in wool.

Instructions for Hat:

1.    Cast on 100 stitches.

2.    Join in the round, without twisting stitches. Place a stitch marker if desired.

3.    Knit in Garter Stitch (knit one row, purl one row in the round) for one inch. Alternatively, you can knit this part flat and seam it later.

4.    Knit in Stockinette Stitch until piece measures 6 inches from end of Garter Stitch.

5.    *Knit 3, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around.

6.    Knit next row.

7.    *Knit 2, k2tog. Repeat from * around.

8.    Knit next round.

9.    *Knit 1, k2tog. Repeat from * around.

10. K2tog around.

11. K2tog around.

12. Cut yarn, thread onto yarn needle and slide stitches onto yarn. Pull tight. Weave in ends.

Instructions for Scarf:

1.    Choose where you want your scarf to hang. I centered my first scarf piece on the tail of the cast-on edge, but you can start anywhere you want.

2.    Pick up and knit 20 stitches along the cast on edge.

3.    Knit in Garter Stitch for 20 inches, or to desired length.

4.    Bind off.

5.    Fold hat in half to determine where the other side of the scarf should start. Pick up and knit 20 stitches as before and knit in Garter Stitch for 20 inches.

6.    Bind off and weave in ends.
